Travel: Inside Mount Athos Winter

Mar 19, 2024

Thanks to the Holy Father, Geron Nektarios, Abbot of the Kalyve of Holy Cross in Skete of Saint Anne in Mount Athos, T2C readers got two insights into the spiritual peninsula of Mount Athos.

In Greek mythology, Athos is the name of one of the Gigantes that challenged the Greek gods during the Gigantomachia. Athos threw a massive rock at Poseidon which fell in the Aegean Sea and became Mount Athos.

Homer mentions the mountain Athos in the Iliad.

The peninsula was on the invasion route of Xerxes I, who spent three years excavating the Xerxes Canal across the isthmus to allow the passage of his invasion fleet in 483 BC. After the death of Alexander the Great, the architect Dinocrates (Deinokrates) proposed carving the entire mountain into a statue of Alexander.

The history of the peninsula during latter ages is shrouded by the lack of historical accounts. Archaeologists have not been able to determine the exact location of the cities reported by Strabo. It is believed that they must have been deserted when Athos’ new inhabitants, the monks, started arriving some time before the ninth century.

Geron Nektarios, Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi, Mount Athos should be coming to New York in October and T2C will definitely be covering that.

Yesterday we showed you insight to Mount Athos.

According to the legend, the Blessed Virgin Mary was sailing accompanied by St John the Evangelist from Joppa to Cyprus to visit Lazarus. When the ship was blown off course to then-pagan Athos, it was forced to anchor near the port of Klement, close to the present monastery of Iviron. The Virgin walked ashore and, overwhelmed by the wonderful and wild natural beauty of the mountain, she blessed it and asked her Son for it to be her garden. A voice was heard saying, “Ἔστω ὁ τόπος οὗτος κλῆρος σὸς καὶ περιβόλαιον σὸν καὶ παράδεισος, ἔτι δὲ καὶ λιμὴν σωτήριος τῶν θελόντων σωθῆναι” (Translation: “Let this place be your inheritance and your garden, a paradise and a haven of salvation for those seeking to be saved”). From that moment the mountain was consecrated as the garden of the Mother of God and was out of bounds to all other women.

Always under repair. This peninsula is kept in working order.

The Athos peninsula in northeastern Greece and Mount Athos, is one of the most important centers of the Christian Orthodox world. Also known as the “Holy Mountain”, this monastic community is banned to women both human and animal.

These historical monastic traditions, date back to at least 800 AD during the Byzantine era. Because of its long history of religious importance, the well-preserved agrarian architecture within the monasteries, and the preservation of the flora and fauna around the mountain, were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.

The Power of Gemstones

Gemstones are the essence of these healing crystal bracelets, each bringing its healing properties. Grounding oneself can be achieved with an Onyx bracelet while seeking spiritual guidance can be facilitated by wearing a Clear Quartz bracelet.

Understanding How They Work

The concept behind crystal healing lies in the belief that different stones possess distinct vibrations or energies that can positively influence our energy fields. We can carry their energy throughout the day by wearing gemstone jewelry.

Furthermore, the psychological impact of wearing something beautiful that reminds us of our commitment to healing and growth should not be underestimated. Glancing down at our wrists reinforces our dedication to self-care and personal development.

Choosing the Right Bracelet

Selecting a Healing Crystal Bracelet is enjoyable and involves considering your power, energy, and style. However, an intuitive approach is recommended when choosing the bracelet that resonates with you. Pay attention to which stones call out to you and which align with your current situation or goals.

For instance, an Amethyst bracelet may activate your third eye chakra and enhance your creative flow if you feel creatively blocked. If anxiety is weighing heavily on you, a Rose Quartz bracelet can provide soothing energy and promote heart-opening changes within yourself.

Color psychology can also play a role in your decision. A Jade bracelet might be the perfect choice if green brings you a sense of calm and grounding. Alternatively, if yellow uplifts your mood, a Citrine bracelet can brighten your day and boost your confidence.

Caring for Your Bracelet

Proper care is essential to ensure that your Healing Crystal Bracelet continues to serve you well. Be mindful of where you wear it, as some stones are more delicate and could be damaged by water or extreme temperatures.

There are various methods to cleanse your bracelet. Leaving it outside under the moonlight or burying it in sea salt overnight are effective options. Alternatively, you can use smoke cleansing with sage or palo santo.

When not in use, store your bracelet safely away from direct sunlight.

Personal Experience

Having dealt with anxiety and depression, incorporating healing crystals into my daily life has profoundly impacted me. Wearing a Healing Crystal Bracelet acts as a reminder on my wrist that everything will be okay – a gentle prompt to breathe and find solace.
